Choosing a laser hair removal system: Helio and Stardust MED explained

A laser hair removal service needs a good match between the device, the clients you expect to see and the way your clinic works. Wavelengths matter, but so do assessment, cooling, handpiece design, maintenance and the full appointment experience.

Why does hair colour matter?

Hair reduction lasers use light absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle. This interaction produces heat that can affect the hair's growth mechanism. Hair growth occurs in cycles, and the stage of an individual hair influences its response. This is one reason a course of treatment is commonly discussed. [1]

The presence of suitable pigment is important. White and grey hair, and very light hair, are generally poor targets for laser hair reduction. Fine, downy hair also needs careful assessment. A clinic should explain suitability before presenting a package, rather than assuming that every area of unwanted hair is equally responsive. [1]

What does a multi-wavelength diode system offer?

The Helio range includes several configurations. Helio Mini combines 755, 808 and 1064 nm; other Helio models in the catalogue combine 755, 808, 940 and 1064 nm. Stardust MED, manufactured by ITS in Italy, combines 755, 808 and 1064 nm within its diode system. [3] [4] [5]

A wavelength list describes the optical output of the system. It does not mean that a diode platform contains separate alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers, even when some wavelength numbers are similar. Compare the actual source, delivery method and intended use of each device. The configuration should be assessed as a complete system. [3]

Look beyond immediate smoothness

A randomised, paired comparison of diode laser approaches followed participants for 18 months. It provides an example of research assessing longer-term hair reduction rather than judging success only immediately after treatment. The study involved specific equipment and a small group, so it cannot establish a universal result for all diode systems. [2]

For your own service, agree how progress will be recorded. Area, hair characteristics, photographs where appropriate and client feedback help make the review concrete. Set expectations about variable response and possible further treatment. Avoid promising that every hair will disappear permanently.

Compare the complete appointment

Handpiece size and handling affect how the operator works around different areas. Cooling, the treatment room layout and the process for cleaning and recording a visit also belong in the comparison. Ask to see the configuration that would actually be supplied to your clinic.

Capacity should be calculated using the whole appointment. Consultation, preparation, the procedure, client advice and resetting the room all use time. A larger treatment spot or a higher headline power does not automatically translate into the same increase in completed appointments.

  • Compare handpieces, cooling and the equipment included in each package.
  • Ask about servicing, consumables and support if the device is unavailable.
  • Check how your team will be prepared for the chosen system and client group.

Turn the comparison into a plan

Start with the hair removal example in the SkinLight calculator, then enter your own appointment time, expected bookings and delivery costs. The worked example is an illustration, not evidence of local demand or a recommended treatment price.

SkinLight Academy's laser hair removal enquiry can accompany the equipment discussion. Tell us whether you are introducing a first service, moving to another platform or developing the skills of an existing team.

Questions from clinic teams.

Does having more wavelengths guarantee a better result?

No. The complete device, hair and skin characteristics, suitability assessment and appropriate professional use determine how the technology fits an individual treatment plan.

Can I compare Helio and Stardust MED before registering for training?

Yes. Describe the services you want to offer and your team's experience when you enquire. Equipment selection and training needs can be discussed together.
